If you want to design walks, you need good mapping software. If you are in the UK, Mapyx Quo is by far and away the best. The software is fabulous and free, the maps are Ordnance Survey, and you can buy JUST what you need, and they supply Lowrance GPSr units, especially adapted to use the SAME map tiles as you have for the software, saving you a fortune.
There is a fabulously simple interface for just buying the map tiles you need, and you can then print out just the bits of map you need for your walk.
